Apr 13, 2018  To get a California DMV Driving Permit, teens between the ages of 15½ and 17½ must complete an approved driver education. If you are over the age of 18, taking drivers ed is also a smart decision because many insurance providers offer insurance discount by taking our course! Good driver education (classroom instruction) and driver training (actual behind-the-wheel instruction) are important because they are the foundation for the skills and attitudes you will use for the rest of your life. The knowledge, skills, and attitudes you learn in driver education/training classes will help you avoid traffic tickets, lower your chances of being involved in accidents, and make you a safer driver.

You may take driver education or driver training at a public or private high school, or at a state licensed driving school.

Teen Driver Education

NOTE:If your driver education and driver training were taken in a state other than California, DMV will accept either a

  • 'To Secondary Schools Other Than California Schools' form (DL 33) form completed by the out-of state secondary school. Obtain a DL 33 form from your local DMV office or by calling DMV at 1-800-777-0133. Send the DL 33 form to your out-of-state secondary school to complete.
  • letter from your out-of state secondary school on the out-of-state secondary school's stationery signed by a school official stating that the courses you have taken are equivalent to a California secondary school course described in Section 10020 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations.

An out-of-state driving instructional permit is not acceptable proof of driver education and driver training.

  • 25 hours of classroom instruction. The 25-hour minimum does not include breaks or meal times.
  • Home study or an Internet training program. If you choose home study or an Internet training program, it must be the equivalent of the requirements for classroom instruction.

Driver Training must consist of at least:

  • 6 hours of driver training.
  • The driver training cannot exceed two hours per day. If you are in the car and observing another driver, that time does not count toward the 6 hours you need for the required behind-the-wheel driver training.
