✏Beowulf Book Summary : The classic story of Beowulf, hero and dragon-slayer, appears here in a new translation accompanied by genealogical charts, historical summaries, and a glossary of proper names. These and other documents sketching some of the cultural forces behind the poem's final creation will help readers see Beowulf as an exploration of the politics of kingship and the psychology of heroism, and as an early English meditation on the bridges and chasms between the pagan past and the Christian present. A generous sample of other modern versions of Beowulf sheds light on the process of translating the poem.

✏The Adventures of Beowulf Book Summary : Beowulf, written in Old English sometime before the Tenth Century CE, describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. A rich fabric of fact and fancy, Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic in British literature. This is not a line-by-line translation of the original poem but an attempt to recreate the poem in free verse so that no words must be added for the sake of formal meter or rhyme. In addition, free verse allows for the poem to approach the rhythms of the original. Some explanation has been added to the verse. Some lines have been cut. And the curious, contradictory section from line 1888 to line 2199 has been omitted. This is not an exact translation of the poem but rather a new version, close to the original but a poem in its own right. Beowulf can be used as an historical text. It has much to teach us about an ancient culture. More importantly, however, it is a ripping good story. This translation attempts to tell that story.

✏The Anglo Saxon World Book Summary : Beowulf, The Battle of Maldon, The Dream of the Rood, The Wanderer, and The Seafarer are among the greatest surviving Anglo-Saxon poems. They, and many other treasures, are included in The Anglo-Saxon World: chronicles, laws and letters, charters and charms, and above all superb poems. Here is a word picture of a people who came to these islands as pagans and yet within two hundred years had become Christians, to such effect that England was the centre of missionary endeavour and, fora time, the heart of European civilization. Kevin Crossley-Holland places poems and prose in context with his skilful interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon world; his translations have been widely acclaimed, and of Beowulf the poet Charles Causley has written, 'the poem has at last found its translator'.
